What are anxiety disorders?

Anxiety is a normal emotion. It’s your brain’s way of reacting to stress and alerting you of potential danger ahead. Everyone feels anxious now and then. For example, you may worry when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.

Occasional anxiety is OK. But anxiety disorders are different. They’re a group of mental illnesses that cause constant and overwhelming anxiety and fear.  The excessive anxiety can make you avoid work, school, family get-togethers, and other social situations that might trigger or worsen your symptoms.

Anxiety disorders are mental health conditions characterized by feelings of worry, anxiety, or fear. While most people experience these emotions at some point in their lives, people with anxiety disorders have feelings that are so persistent or strong that they interfere with the person’s daily activities, according to the American Psychiatric Association.

The disorders impact about 40 million adult Americans; anxiety-related issues are the most prevalent mental illness in the United States. They tend to start in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood, and they’re more common in women than in men. Some other medical conditions and health issues are linked with anxiety as well as anxiety disordersthese conditions may mimic anxiety symptoms, cause anxiety, or put people at a higher risk for anxiety disorders.
